Lebenslauf:

 

Richard Basehart kam 1947 über den Broadway ins Filmgeschäft, wo er in "Repeat Performance" debütierte. Zeit seines Lebens spielte er in über 100 Filmen und Fernsehserien im In- und Ausland mit, darunter in Klassikern wie der Erstverfilmung von "Titanic" (1953), Federico Fellinis "La Strada" (1954), "Moby Dick" (1956) oder "Shangri La" (1960).

Dem Science-Fiction-Publikum wurde er auf der ganzen Welt bekannt als "Admiral Harriman Nelson" in 110 Folgen der Serie "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", in der er das futuristische U-Boot Seaview befehligte.

Im Fernsehstück "Valley Forge" spielte Richard George Washington, dessen Erzfeind General Howe von Harry Andrews gespielt wurde. Andrews hatte zuvor den ersten Maat "Stubb" in "Moby Dick" dargestellt, in dem Richard "Ishmael" spielte.

In der Fernsehversion von "The Paradine Case" spielte er dann die gleiche Rolle, die Gregory Peck in der Filmversion gespielt hatte. Peck und Basehart standen auch beide in "Moby Dick" vor der Kamera, wo Peck "Captain Ahab" darstellte.

Am 14.01.1940 heiratete er seine erste Frau, Stephanie Klein. Während der Dreharbeiten zu "Fourteen Hours" erkrankte sie an einem Hirntumor und starb sehr plötzlich. Völlig niedergeschlagen beendete Richard die Dreharbeiten und verließ die Staaten. Er ging nach Italien, wo er Valentina Cortese begegnete. Am 24.03.1951 heirateten die beiden.

1955 bot ihm der italienische Kult-Regisseur Federico Fellini die Rolle des Narren in "La Strada" an. Auf Richards Frage hin, wieso er ihn für diesen Part wollte, antwortete Fellini: "Wenn du das tun kannst, was du in 'Fourteen Hours' getan hast, kannst du alles tun."

1960 verließ ihn seine Frau und kehrte mit ihrem kleinen Sohn nach Italien zurück. Erneut war Richard total deprimiert. Sein enger Freund Warren Stevens war so besorgt um ihn, dass er ihm ein Apartment neben seinem eigenen besorgte. Monatelang telefonierte Richard nach Italien, aber Valentina hob nie ab. Als Richard schließlich die Scheidung einreichte, fungierte Stevens als sein Zeuge.

Doch bereits 1962 ehelichte er seine dritte Ehefrau kennen - Diana Lotery, mit der er bis zu seinem Tod verheiratet war. Beide gründeten 1971 die Organisation "Schauspieler und andere für Tiere". Während einer Fahrt auf der Autobahn mussten sie schockiert mit ansehen, wie jemand eine Katze aus dem Fahrzeug vor ihnen aus dem Fenster warf. Für dieses Tier kam jede Hilfe zu spät, aber beide schworen, sich zukünftig für andere Tiere einzusetzen.

Richards letzter Job als Schauspieler war die des Moderators der Abschlusszeremonie der Olympischen Spiele 1984 in Los Angeles. Am Tag nach der Aufzeichnung erlitt er mehrere Herzinfarkte.

Ein Theater in Woodland Hills, Kalifornien, ist nach ihm benannt.

"Nichts irritiert mich mehr als Schauspieler, die das ganze Geld nehmen und sich dann darüber beschweren, wie schrecklich einschränkend doch das Fernsehen ist. Solche Sprüche sagen viel über sie aus."

 

Auf die Frage, was der Unterschied zwischen "Hamlet" und "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" sei:

"Bei Shakespeare gibt es mehr Charakter, als ein Schauspieler jemals verarbeiten kann. Aber es gibt keine größere Herausforderung, als etwas aus nichts zu machen."
