Der als Val Edward Kilmer geborene Schauspieler ging zusammen mit Kevin Spacey und Mare Winningham auf die Chatsworth Highschool und studierte an der Hollywood's Professional School. Als Teenager trat er als damals bisher jüngste Person dem renommierten Juillard's-Drama-Programm bei. Seine Berufskarriere begann auf der Theaterbühne, wo er immer noch gelegentlich auftritt. 1988 spielte der "Hamlet" beim Colorado-Shakespeare-Festival. Sein Kinofilmdebüt war in der Parodie "Top Secret" von 1984, in der er als blonder Rockstar auftritt. Weltweit bekannt wurde er 1986 als Jet-Pilot im Megahit "Top Gun" an der Seite von Tom Cruise. Ursprünglich wollte er in diesem Film gar nicht mitspielen, war aber vertraglich dazu verpflichtet.

1988 hatte er eine der Hauptrollen im ersten Fantasy-Film des "Star-Wars"-Schöpfers George Lucas - "Willow". Trotz seines Talents und seiner Bandbreite wurde er erst durch seine Darstellung des Jim Morrison in Oliver Stones "The Doors" im Jahr 1991 weltberühmt. In diesem Film über die Musikerlegende singt er alle Songs selbst! Die echten Bandmitglieder gaben zu, sie hätten Schwierigkeiten, seine Stimme von der Morrisons zu unterscheiden.

Seither hat er gleich zwei amerikanische Legenden gespielt, nämlich Elvis Presley in "True Romance" und Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" (beide 1993). 1994 übernahm er die Rolle des Batman/Bruce Wayne im 3. Teil der Kinofilmreihe "Batman Forever".

Von 1988 bis 1996 war er mit der Schauspielerin Joanne Whalley verheiratet, in die er sich bei den Dreharbeiten zu "Willow" verliebt hatte. Aus dieser Ehe hat er zwei Kinder: Mercedes (1991 geboren) und Jack (1995 geboren).

Zu seinen Hobbies gehören Schnorcheln und Wandern. Er liebt Büffel und besitzt sogar welche auf seiner Ranch in New Mexico, wo er seit 1983 lebt.
